about us
Derived from the Latin word for sheet, layer or plate, the name Lamina references the natural world and the physical process of fabricating this complex plywood chair.
The construction and placement of the veneers has been carefully considered, allowing the grain direction to emphasise the chair's gently curved form. The flexibility of the plywood veneers allow a three-dimensional object to be formed into a highly natural and organic shape, making for a warm inviting chair.
Four versions of the Chair have been developed, each emphasising a different characteristic of the design. The original oak chair shows off the curves and the natural colour and grain of the timber, the black lacquered version creates bold lines and textured surfaces, whilst the variegated green chair emphasises the three distinct sections that make up the chair. Finally, the upholstered version elevates the level of comfort whilst referencing furniture pieces unique to the 1950s and 60s.
Comfort was a paramount consideration to the design, reflected in the generous proportions of the seat. The gently folding arm rests welcome the sitter into the organic form, heightening the warm and tactile experience of the timber chair.
Through a combination of digital design, hand and CNC fabrication processes the Lamina collection is skilfully crafted. Alexander works with a CNC specialist to produce the final chair sections, which are digitally trimmed to perfection. Each version has been designed, modelled and prototyped by Alexander Kneller then fabricated, assembled and hand finished at his studio in Victoria.
